About Me
Hi! I'm a first year philosophy PhD student at UC Berkeley. I'm particularly interested in exploring how formal tools can be used to illuminate problems in ethics—especially in population ethics, animal ethics, infinite ethics, and the ethics of war.
Previously, I did a MPhil in Philosophy at the University of St Andrews where I was supervised by the wonderful (and extremely patient!) Franz Berto and Kevin Scharp. My MPhil thesis was on the question of how many correct logics there are, and defended logical monism from the twin threats of logical nihilism and logical pluralism. On the off-chance you're interested, you can check out my research page. Even further back in time I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford, where I began life as an Economics & Management student, before seeing the light and switching to Philosophy, Politics, & Economics. When I'm not doing philosophy, I'm a fan of stand-up comedy, practical jokes, and hiking. I'm also a committed vegan and effective altruist. And, as you can see from the photos below, I'm an animal lover! Back at my mum's place in England, we're lucky enough to share our lives with three very spoilt dogs (Guinness, Oscar, and Jeff), two mischievous goats (Dixie and Daisy), two crazy emus (Confucius and Tolkein), and three noisy chickens (Dot, Henny-Penny, and Ruth). If you're intrigued, there's a medley of photos below that you can peruse at your leisure. |
Philosophical Interests
I'm especially interested in how formal tools can be used to shed light upon philosophical problems. The following areas in particular have captured my imagination:
